Hamamatsu is very famous for its eel farming and there are a number of eel restaurants in the Greater Hamamatsu area. Snapping turtle farming is also a well-known industry of Hamamatsu. Snapping turtles are considered a delicacy in Japan, and turtle dishes are a great treat on a cold winter day. There are many orchards in the suburbs of Hamamatsu, where families can enjoy orange picking, strawberry picking and grape picking according to the season.
 
Eel
Eel from Lake Hamana is very famous as the taste of Hamamatsu. There are many varieties of eel dishes to choose from, from the most popular Kabayaki to Shiroyaki, Ochazuke, and Kimoyaki.

  Suppon (Snapping Turtles)
Suppon, or snapping turtles, is a delicacy which is rich in nutrition. Suppon can be served in soup, deep-fried, raw, etc. Brave souls should try suppon's blood mixed with sake.

 
Wild tiger blowfish
Enshu-Nada is known as one of the best places in Japan to fish for wild tiger blowfish. Since they are caught here in their natural habitat, they are guaranteed to be fresh.
  Sharp-toothed eel
These eels are used in popular Kyoto summer dishes. Like blowfish, these eels are caught right here in Enshu-Nada.

 
Seafood
Lake Hamana, where sea water and fresh water mix, is an abundant resource for various kinds of seafood. You can enjoy varieties of fresh seafood throughout the year.

  Shirasu (whitebait)
The Maisaka Fishing Port is one of the few places in Japan where shirasu can be caught. Boiled shirasu is good, of course, but we also recommend the fresh, raw shirasu.

 
Locally-brewed rice wine (Hamamatsu, Hamakita, Haruno)
Using delicious water from local streams and locally grown rice, the rice wines produced here have become well-known throughout Japan.
  Tea
Tea leaves are grown throughout Hamamatsu City, but Haruno and Tenryu are particularly well-known as tea growing areas.

 
Mikan (mandarin oranges)
The mountains on the northern shore of Lake Hamana are covered with orange groves which produce mandarin oranges famous all over Japan for being particularly sweet.
  Unagi Pie
To satisfy your sweet tooth, try Unagi Pie, cookies made with fresh butter with crushed eel bones, eel extract, or garlic mixed in. It's the most popular souvenir from Hamamatsu.

 
Tochimochi
(rice cake with horse chestnut powder, Enshu Road in Misakubo)
The mild bitterness of horse chestnut powder and the sweetness of azuki bean paste make a great combination and produce a distinctive scent. These rice cakes are famous as a mountain village specialty.
  Misoman (steamed bread filled with bean paste)
A Hosoe specialty, these manju delicacies are made from brown sugar bread and strained sweet azuki bean paste.

   
Gyoza (Japanese dumplings)
These common pan fried dumplings are popular with the people of Hamamatsu and rank #2 in nationwide sales.
   



Digging for Clams Strawberry Picking Grape Picking
Visit the beaches in Lake Hamana and enjoy clam digging on the tideland. Many families come to enjoy clam digging from the beginning of April to the beginning of September.
You can enjoy strawberry picking from mid-December to late May at orchards in Greater Hamamatsu or at Hamamatsu Fruit Park. Savor the taste of varieties of fresh strawberries that were developed in Shizuoka Prefecture.
